Education

In 476 CE, the reading and writing ability went down. The only people left with these skills were the clergy. Not even all of the clergy had these skills. Charlemagne wanted his officals to read and write. When he gave them a note he wanted them to know what it meant. He turned his palace to a learning center. Scholars came from different parts of Europe to teach at his palace. Charlemagne could read, but not write. He tried to learn, but his hands were scared from battle. Other nobles were offered to learn too, but they didn't except the offer. Frankish nobles thought reading and writing was a waste of time because they were warriors. He made all of his scholars copy the manuscripts to Latin by hand. All the middle age books were hand written. Each page was designed. Every book was written to glorify religion.
